Across the Year in 10 Dates

One last look at 2011’s most important events.

In hindsight, 2011 has been quite a troublesome year for everyone (Terrorists, dictators, politicians, businessmen, scientists, soldiers, civilians and average Joes alike), filled with deaths, births, natural disasters and explosions. So, before striding confidently into the next year, let’s give a last glance behind our backs at the tattered remains of the old year, as well as a perhaps more hopeful peek into the next…



  • 14th of January:  The large number of demonstrations throughout the Arabic countries (also known as “The Arab Spring”) continue after having begun the 18th of December of the previous year: following a large number of very violent protests mainly for Civil Rights and against the sudden high increase of food prices, President and Dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali flees Saudi Arabia after being in power for the last 23 years.
  •  11th of February: The Arab Spring continues as the President of Egypt Hoshni Murabak, pressured by a massive number of demonstrations, resigns, leaving the military in control of Egypt until the next elections.
  •   11th of March: Japan is hit by a massive tsunami when an earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale takes place nearby with its epicenter located in the Pacific Ocean, causing over 15000 deaths and the malfunctioning of the nuclear plant in Fukushima
  •   29th of April: People across the world (Reports estimate over 2 billion people) stay glued to their TVs to watch the royal marriage between the English Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
  •   1st of May: After an entire decade, the president of the United States Barack Obama announces to the world that the terrorist and leader of  al Qaeda Osama bin Laden has been killed in a firefight in Pakistan.
  •   22nd of July: On a small lake island near Buskerud, Norway, within a two-hours distance from a car-bombing near Norway’s executive government quarter in Oslo, right-wing extremist Anders Breivik, disguised as a police officer, kills 69 civilians.
  •  23rd of September: According to the results that that we have been told about by the experts at the laboratories at the CERN of Geneva, it is possible there may neutrinos may be able to travel faster than the speed of light, splitting the entire scientific world in two opposing factions.
  • -       20th of October: The Arab Spring rages on, as Lybian dictator Gheddaffi is finally discovered after his government has been overthrown by rebels August 20th-28th of that same year.
  • -       12th of November:  Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi resigns, after a total of 12 years in power, handing over power to a new non-partisan government led by Mario Monti.
